Responsibilities
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
The Designated Safeguarding Lead is responsible for:
- Overseeing safeguarding practices within the organization.
- Acting as the main point of contact for safeguarding concerns.
- Ensuring that staff and volunteers are trained in safeguarding procedures.
- Reporting concerns to appropriate authorities when necessary.
Staff and Volunteers
All staff and volunteers must:
- Adhere to this safeguarding policy and related procedures.
- Attend safeguarding training sessions regularly.
- Report any concerns regarding a child’s safety or well-being to the DSL immediately.
Procedures
Recruitment and Selection
- Background Checks: All staff and volunteers will undergo appropriate background checks (e.g., DBS checks).
- References: Obtain and verify references for all applicants.
Reporting Concerns
If you suspect or are informed of abuse or neglect, follow these steps:
- Stay Calm: Listen to the child and reassure them.
- Do Not Investigate: Avoid probing or asking leading questions.
- Report Immediately: Inform the DSL as soon as possible.
- Document Details: Record the details of the concern, including dates, times, and what was said.
Responding to Allegations
If an allegation is made against a staff member or volunteer, we will:
- Ensure Safety: Ensure the safety of the child involved.
- Inform the DSL: Report the allegation to the DSL immediately.
- Follow Procedures: Adhere to local safeguarding board procedures and cooperate with any investigations.
Training and Awareness
- Induction Training: All new staff and volunteers will receive safeguarding training as part of their induction.
- Ongoing Training: Regular refresher training will be provided to ensure all staff are updated on safeguarding practices and policies.
Review and Monitoring
This safeguarding policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are significant changes to legislation or organizational practices. Feedback from staff, volunteers, and parents will be considered during the review process.
